Intro
G D F C X 2

G D
First day in August
F C
Last rain was in May
         G D
When the rainmaker came to Kansas
       F C
In the middle of a dusty day
    G D
And the rainmaker said to the people of Kansas
  F C
"What you are prepared to pay"
         G D
Said the rainmaker to all the people of Kansas
       F C
"I can bring you on a rain today"

Break
G D F C X 2

G C
Was ninety degrees in the heat where it's shady
G F C
Hundred and ten in the hot sun
G C
Heat from the street burned the feet of the ladies
F G A
See how they run...how they run

Break
(A) E G D D A E

G D
Called down the lightning
F C
By a mystical name
         G D
Then the rainmaker called on the thunder
    F C
And it suddenly began to rain
         G D
Then the rainmaker passed his hat to the people
        F C
But the people all turned away
         G
Then the rainmaker's eyes
        D
And the Kansas skies
     F C
They both became a darker grey

Break
G D F C

         G D
It's the first day in August
F C
Hasn't been rain since May
         G D
When the rainmaker came into Kansas
       F C
In the middle of a dusty day
    G D
The rainmaker smiled as he hitched up his wagon
F C
Without a word he rode way
        G D
And the people of the town heard the sound of his laughter
     F C
They knew the rain had come to stay

Banter
G D F C (repeat through out)
And they were so afraid,
G D F C
Well if the rain continued, surely, they would lose all their crops
G D F C
and in the ensuing flood they would lose their very farms
G D F C
and they were so afraid.
G D F C
What can they do, they said,
G D F C
We'll have to get some airplanes in here,
G D F C
We'll get 5 or 6 of those big bombers and will spray the clouds.
G D F C
We'll use some of those fine chemicals they have on the market now.
G D F C
So up went 5 big airplanes and they dumped phosphates,
G D F C
and they dumped octoates, and they dumped all kinds of ates on the clouds,
G D F C
but nothing happened, except that the clouds got a little darker,
G D F C
and it rained a little harder.
G D F C
And so, in a fit of panic, the people got together again and said,
G D F C
We've got to do something to stop this rain,
G D F C
and a little man said, well, why don't you sing?
G D F C
And they said, well ok, we sing in church on Sundays,
G D F C
I suppose it would be alright to sing here too so they got together
G D F C
and said, ok, let's do it but, what should we sing?
G D F C
And the young man said, well, if you want the rain to go away,
G D F C
I'd suggest you sing, rain rain, go away, come again another day,
G D F C
or something like that and eventually you will just disburse the clouds.
G D F C
So, they said, we'll give it a try.
G D F C
But you must remember that Kansas is a very uptight little community
G D F C
and so the result when all of these people got together to sing
G D F C
was that no one wanted anyone else to know that it was going on.
G D F C
So, it sounded kinda' like, uh,
G D F C
(muffled) rain rain oh won't ya go away, come again another day.
G D F C
No spirit in it at all and the little man said,
G D F C
"Now if you really believe in something, it's gonna work out for you,
G D F C
but if you don't believe in it,
G D F C
it's not gonna work at all, so ya gotta' sing it you know!"
G D F C
And they all said, well ok, I suppose we can do it.
G D F C
It was very quiet at first, you could hardly hear it.
G D F C
It was just a little: rain rain go away, come again another day
G D F C
rain rain go away, come again another day
G D F C
Then a few more people heard it,
G D F C
rain rain go away, come again another day
G D F C
then a few more joined in
G D F C
rain rain go away come again another day.

Outro
G D
Rain rain go away
F C
Come again another day
G D
Rain rain go away
F C
Come again another day
G D
Rain rain go away
F C
Come again another day
Repeat to fade...
